Sunset made it one more time!

They arrived. Sunset Presbyterian Church arrived on time with Continental Airlines, made it through customs with all their bags, and only had a jar of peanut butter taken from them in the process. So an uneventful arrival is always good when traveling to a third world country. We got through immigrations got on the bus and ate lunch at Bojangles Fried Chicken. We quickly took our A/C bus to Oakridge and said "goodbye to A/C for the next 12 days. Loaded up our newly remodeled boat with ourselves and went to Helene. We arrived there at 4:08pm. "Team Helene" was excited to see old friends and make new ones quickly, so the life of a missionary. We did our two stage orientation together, ate supper and off to church. The Sun is setting here but Sunset is rising to the occasion. Rock on Sunset Presbyterian.

Ministry Partner

Sunset Presbyterian is a ministry partner with Alternative Missions and Helene, Honduras. We will have a group from their church for the next two weeks June 14-June 27th. We will have times of worship in local churches, we will share in building homes, repair the local school, remodeling a basketball court, visiting in homes, medical outreaches and the all around fun of Clean sweep. The children will be blessed in each community with sports camps and backyard bible clubs all to enrich the lives of those who live on Helene, Honduras. Hosted by "Team Helene" the local missionary staff, each participant will experience a different culture and a God who can make a difference in everyone's life. Welcome Sunset Presbyterian Church!

Helene Christian English School

We have just completed our first month of school. The "Helene Christian English School" is taking root in the community of Helene, Honduras. During the month of May 60 students matriculated in grades K-6. They paid their first month tuition and the money collected from the community was 50% of the total cost of running the school. The community is definitely taking action to keep their English school. Team Helene shudders often at the changes they have made. Often our decisions seem risky and we wonder what will happen next. The truth is God is up to something in Helene and we just want to be part of it. God invited us here to work with Him and we are enjoying the ride.

Our House

Sheila and I live in a 600 square foot house. It has running cold water, no hot, it has 5 fans, no A/C, has a small sitting room, breakfast nook, open kitchen, bedroom, and a bathroom. Sheila and I really enjoy this private spot. It is our home. We often have people over for breakfast. Islanders walk up to the door and do not knock they only yell. Some time usually after 5am, Mr Larry you awake! and after that I am.

David Chase

David Chase is an intern. He is here for 90 days but just changed his dates to stay a few more weeks. He is a fun Guy too work with. When you first meet David it is very quiet. He processes everything he sees. He slowly emerges, with personality, opinions, passion, and commitment. He is rather expressive.

To the left is David's first Friend, a Gecko, but David refused the insurance.

David had no problem giving instruction to Deirdre our medical provider. You go David!

David is not making friends with everyone. Meya is a kitten that hangs around us all. David just wanted her to know I got Cha!

David had his first day off the island yesterday. We all took the afternoon off. I do not know how often we can take David with us.

It seemed to be a traumatic experience for him, I guess there was too much for David to do at once holding a watermellon, taking a picture, and eating a Klondike bar can send one over the edge.

David is a big eater, so here we are packing up 26 boxes of food. Look who is standing there asking!
"Are you sure this enough Alex."

President Nelson

This morning I was awakened early. Our small boat was about to sink. So I jumped up, found Ewings and he was off to save the day and I was walking back to the house for my first cup of coffee. So, ok! I delegate. On the way back, Nelson, was coming across the path so we stopped right under our big tree. He is our school board president so we talked about school a few minutes we talked about students, families, teachers. Then he said "you know Mr. Larry, I teach Sunday school with the children, and those that come to the English school can already read their bibles. We have to keep this school going so the children will learn more quickly about Jesus. I am devoted to the school, we need it." We talked about a few more things then said, "alright, right here" and went on our ways. As I left I was thinking and thanking God, for my little part in making this happen. Children reading the bible. It seems I have always known how to read it is hard for me to think someone cannot, but so many here can't. Thank you God, for changing the face of the future for Helene.
